Free Baby Passport Photo Maker

No studio visit with a sleeping newborn. Upload a photo and AI detects baby's face, frames it to the exact US 2x2 inch (600x600) or 35x45 mm spec, and whitens the background. It runs on the same engine as our main photo maker. Fine-tune with drag and zoom, then download. Free, private, in your browser.

Baby passport photo rules (USA, UK, EU)

Babies need the same biometric photo as adults (plain white background, face centred, no shadows), with a few small allowances. The UK permits closed eyes for babies under 1, but the US State Department still asks for eyes open and no pacifier, hat or supporting hands. Photos must be recent (6 months, UK 1 month).

The output spec is identical to adult photos: US babies use 2x2 inches (600x600 px JPEG), UK/EU babies use 35x45 mm. Only the shoot is harder. The file format is the same, which is why this tool exports both.

Photographing a newborn at home

  • Prep the backdrop. White sheet ironed flat (bed for newborns, wall for sitters). Clear toys, patterns and shadows.
  • Light it right in the daytime near a big window, baby facing the light. No flash (red-eye + shadows), no overhead yellow bulbs.
  • Shoot fast: eye-level lens, burst mode, 10-15 frames. Newborns, shoot from above between naps. Toddlers, a toy-squeak for attention and a neutral mouth.
  • Crop it here. Upload the sharpest frame, fit the face in the oval guide (head 50-69% of height for USA), brighten if needed, then download the JPEG and tile copies with our 4x6 print sheet tool.

5 rejection reasons for baby photos

  • Hands in frame. Supporting hands under the head are the #1 baby rejection, so slide the support outside the crop or clone the pose with two adults at the edges.
  • Shadows on the face or the sheet. Move 1 meter off the wall, face the window, skip flash.
  • A pacifier, bottle or food in frame. The mouth must be closed and empty, so shoot between feeds.
  • Wrong head size. Too far means a tiny head. Fill 50-69% of frame height (USA) using the guide overlay.
  • An old photo. Baby faces change monthly, so retake within 6 months (1 month for UK).

The rules that trip parents up

  • Baby photos use the exact adult spec (US 2x2 inch / 600x600 px, UK/EU 35x45 mm). Only the shoot is different.
  • Hands in frame, shadows, and pacifiers cause most rejections; solve them physically (white sheet, daylight, between feeds) before editing.
  • US rules still require eyes open for federal documents; the UK allows closed eyes under 1 year.
  • Head height stays 50–69% of frame for US photos, and the compliance checks in this tool verify it live.
  • Retake within 6 months (1 month for the UK): infant faces change monthly.

Baby vs adult photo rules

The output files are identical. What changes is what you can reasonably ask of a baby:

RequirementAdult photoBaby photo
EyesOpen, looking at cameraOpen required (US, most countries); closed allowed under 1 in the UK
ExpressionNeutral, mouth closedMouth closed, no crying; shoot between feeds
Head height50–69% of frame (US)Same 50–69%, so use the oval guide overlay
Hands / supportsNone visibleNo supporting hands, so move them outside the crop
RecencyWithin 6 monthsWithin 6 months (UK: 1 month); retake as they grow

Photo shoot to submitted application: 5 steps

  1. Shoot in daylight. White sheet, no flash, 10–15 burst frames while baby is calm and fed.
  2. Pick the sharpest frame: eyes open, mouth closed, no hands, no shadows on the sheet.
  3. Crop here. Upload, let the AI frame the face, then check head 50–69% and eye level 18–50%.
  4. Download the JPEG at US 600x600 px or 35x45 mm and 300 DPI, which is the file the application portal expects.
  5. Print copies by tiling the photo on a 4x6 sheet with the print tool. Six copies cover a family application.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a newborn's eyes be closed in a passport photo?

The UK allows closed eyes for babies under 1 year, but the USA and most countries still require eyes open. Aim for eyes open everywhere: shoot between naps in daylight and take bursts.

What size is a baby passport photo?

Same as adults: USA 2x2 inches (51x51 mm, 600x600 px digital), UK/EU 35x45 mm, Canada 50x70 mm. Select the preset above and this tool exports the exact pixels.

How do I get a white background with a wriggly baby?

Start physical rather than fighting it digitally. White sheet tucked flat behind/under baby in daylight gives clean edges. This tool adds a white base and brightness control, but a real white backdrop beats any edit (note: US 2026 rules restrict heavy digital background replacement).

Can I use a phone photo of my baby?

Yes. Rear camera, no flash, no portrait blur, no filter. Shoot 10-15 frames at eye level in daylight, upload the sharpest, and crop here.

Why was my baby photo rejected?

Usually hands in frame, shadows, pacifier, head too small, or busy background. Run the shooting checklist above, keep head at 50-69% of frame height, and re-export.

Is my baby's photo uploaded anywhere?

No. Cropping and export run locally in your browser. Photos never leave your device, which matters for children's privacy.

Can two babies be in one photo?

No. One face per photo, same as adults. Applications for siblings need separate photos; this tool processes each one independently and remembers nothing between uploads.

My baby has very little hair. Does head height still count?

Yes. Head height is measured to the top of the skull for sparse hair, so frame slightly tighter than you think. The compliance check in this tool measures the visible head and flags small or large sizes live.

Do baby photos need to be black and white?

No. Color photos are standard for passports and visas everywhere; current biometric standards expect natural color, not grayscale.

Where do I print baby passport photos?

Use the 4x6 print sheet tool: upload the downloaded JPEG, tile US 2x2 or 35x45 mm copies on one sheet, and order a standard 4x6 print for about $0.39, against $16.99 at a counter.
